Cisco Study Reveals 80% of the World’s Internet Traffic Will Be Video By 2019

In 2014, video content accounted for a remarkable 64% of the entire international’s internet traffic. As per a recent report made by Cisco, by the year 2019, online video will be the reason behind four-fifths of international Internet traffic. The statistics for the U.S.A are even more striking. It comes in at 85%.

The striking increase will not solely be determined by the increased popularity of OTT video streaming services says Cisco. It will also be driven by the sheer number of people that will be linked by the year 2019. Around 3.9 billion people that encompass over half the planet will have access to the Internet by that time. However, the figure of devices able to access the web will be 3 times as high as the worldwide population.

All these will have an immense impact on video traffic. In its recent research, Cisco made a forecast that traffic arriving from mobile and wireless devices will hike up to 66% of all traffic in 4 years. These numbers are backed up by further research.

The IAB confirmed in its recent study that more viewers than ever are accessing video through their cell phones. It was also confirmed that around half of our everyday consumption of digital media is taking place through smartphones and tablets. Another new report found out that this time mobile video traffic will grow 55% each year until 2020 by Ericsson.

What Does Cisco Predict for Video? Future Internet Traffic

Cisco predicts that:

  • 80% of worldwide Internet consumption will be video content by 2019.
  • For an individual, it would take over 5 million years to view the amount of video that will cross international IP networks per month in the year 2019.
  • As 4K video becomes the new standard for consumers, OTT streaming will stimulate the growth.
  • By 2019, international IP Traffic will reach 2 Zettabytes, i.e., 100 trillion gigabytes.
  • In 2019, the traffic gained from wireless and mobile devices will hike up to 66%.
  • By 2019, almost a million minutes of video content will cross I.P. networks every second.
  • In 2014, Internet video to TV grew 47%. It will rise four-fold by 2019.
  • By 2019, consumer VoD traffic will almost double. It will be equivalent to 7 billion DVDs per month.

By 2019, Internet Video Traffic is Expected to Reach 80%

By 2019 it has been predicted by Cisco that traffic from consumer internet video will rule over other kinds of traffic. It will take a massive 80% share of the international market. However, P2P, add VoD, and business consumption to the mix and the figures push their way up to the 90% range.

Internet video is described by Cisco as short-form content, i.e., Facebook, YouTube, long-form, i.e., Hulu, Internet-to-TV (i.e., Netflix), and also online rentals, live-streaming, and purchases, and webcam views. It is anticipated that by 2019, content delivery network traffic will deliver over half of all internet video traffic.

If you take that into perspective, in the year 2019, for a single person, it would take 5 million years to view the amount of video that will surpass the network in one month. It is an astonishing statistics for the industry. However, as the Internet becomes larger, the demands on infrastructure that is able to deliver content to users are going to get even more vital.

Final Note

As per the data of Cisco, by 2019, Internet video streaming and downloads will increase to over 80% of all consumer Internet traffic. We just have to wait and watch how things will turn out.
